The Book of Happiness offers many strategies and techniques to improve the amount of happiness in our lives, but over the years Anne and I have often been asked the question: How can I be happy when I’m unhappy? This question is usually asked by people who are going through genuinely difficult times, when everything seems to be against them and they just can’t seem to turn the corner. It’s nothing to do with malingering, or self pity; it’s genuine circumstances such as grief, sadness, family or financial worries or situations to do with ill health. Now we never ask people to paste a smile on their face in these circumstances (although it is often more helpful than keeping a permanent frown). We say that it’s important to acknowledge that life is difficult at that point in time and having done that, then find the strength and courage to find ways to deal with it in the best possible way. Time and time again we come back to the truth that it’s not circumstances that make us happy or unhappy – it’s the meaning we give to them. And that’s where the choice lies. Anne Watson this year had the chance to show that she could practise what she preaches and we thought you might like us to share the story with you. 2010 has been a particularly busy year for Anne. She has been travelling the world recruiting executives and running management development programmes. This fast paced and demanding job has given her the chance to see wonderful places as well as the opportunity to shiver in unheated hotels in China when the “government” snow fell unexpectedly. She has crossed the Mexican border from Ciudad Juarez, murder city of the world, to El Paso and has fought off pickpockets in Shenzhen, China. At the end of September Anne was in a hotel in Scotland, merely washing her hair, when she slipped and smashed her femur so badly that she is now a teaching case in the local hospital. For ten weeks now Anne has been firmly grounded, life at a sudden halt and confined to a downstairs room in her house, all appointments in her diary cancelled and facing the prospect of a 12 month recovery plan. To her own amazement, she has remained cheerful and focused throughout, even in the hazy morphine filled days when she shared her bedroom with dancing black butterflies, preferring to look at what she had gained from her enforced rest rather than what she had lost. In truth, the list of what she had lost was long and daunting. From a business point of view she missed two important trips to Asia, one trip to the US and she was absent from meetings where she needed to be so as to ensure her voice was heard. She lost many opportunities to influence in her usual way and she lost the power of the face to face meeting. Suddenly everything was on e mail and telephone. At a personal level she had to cancel a family holiday planned for Christmas, she couldn’t make her weekly visit her 89 year old mother who lives 50 miles away, she missed parties, concerts and many informal meetings with friends. For someone accustomed to being in control of her life, she was now completely reliant on others for every single thing. Two year olds were more independent than she was. If she thought about it long enough, it would be depressing. Instead of being unhappy, she discovered a different way to live and a different way to build relationships with others. She discovered that she was swept along on a huge wave of love, best wishes and kindness from people who ranged from close family to slight acquaintances. She learnt that the concern and good will of others outstrips anything else. She made new friends in unexpected places and met inspiring people along the way. Her bed looks out at a wonderful view of the Yorkshire Dales and she has witnessed wonderful dawns and sunsets with some glorious cloud formations to keep her entertained. She learnt how to rely on others and now does not place such a high value on independence, preferring to know how to ask for help. She has learnt that energy is not infinite and now, imagining her energy as though it were fluid in a jar, she measures it out carefully and does not waste it. She has become much more flexible in her planning and her willingness to go with the flow and an excellent side effect is that her technical competence increases daily. She hasn’t been in a shop for months and is the world expert internet shopper. Happiness has become the ability to enjoy the moment, cherish the person, leave behind the trivial and bring life back to what it is all about – the power of human relationships. A broken femur gave her the opportunity afforded to very few to take a step back from normal life and evaluate all that is important and positive. She wouldn’t have missed it for the world. 2011 is fast approaching and we hope that this New Year will bring you what you need to be happy and fulfilled. We also hope it will give you the strength to be flexible in the face of whatever comes your way. None of us can predict the future but we should be able to predict how we are likely to respond. Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas time and a very Happy New Year Warm wishes Heather and Anne $%` -:\~”C^`аYZ[lmэлЮСДСЊССЊС†yeЮ&hwk9hC•56CJOJQJ^JaJhЗ~hwk9OJQJ^JhC•OJQJ^JhЗ~hC•OJQJ^JhЗ~hA}ŠOJQJ^Jhwk9OJQJ^JhЗ~hЊAАOJQJ^JhЗ~h2:‡OJQJ^JhЗ~hЗ6oOJQJ^J#hwk9hŽ(@5CJOJQJ^JaJ#hwk9hЗ6o5CJOJQJ^JaJ%&ќ§U V А Б ` a b ї ј туœ|}стBC_`в㧧§§§§§§§§§јјјјјјјјјјѓѓѓѓѓѓѓgdC•gd2:‡m§MNZ[lmњњњњњјgdC•,1hА‚.
