Have you ever looked at someone else who has got on and up in their career and thought how lucky they were? Did you think to yourself something like Im just as good as them; why have I not been promoted? Or perhaps you felt glad for them and at the same time felt a little bit envious that luck simply seems to come other peoples way but does not come yours? You may even have noticed that many of the people who get on and up are younger/less experienced/ less able than you and that by rights, you feel you should have been promoted before them. Alternatively you may simply feel that you have not attended properly to your career progression up to now - and that its time you did. If any of this fits for you, this article can set you on the right road towards creating the sort of career you have always dreamed of. How can I be as lucky as other people seem to be in my career? Luck and Chance the difference The first thing to be aware of here is that there is a big difference between luck and chance. Chance is something we have no control over. In career terms its when the organisation restructures or when market conditions dictate changes, or when a new boss or colleague arrives and so on.. Luck, on the other hand is something we can influence by what we do. When we look at other people who appear to be lucky, we find that they are doing many things differently to people who are unlucky The bad news and the good news! This article will share with you some proven things that lucky people do to enhance their career prospects and achieve So thats the bad news and the good news all rolled in to one! The bad news is that you cannot expect a new job or a promotion opportunity to fall into your lap no matter how often it appears to happen to other people. You have to want it enough to do something about it. If what you are already doing is not working for you then perhaps it would be a good idea to try some new and different tactics The good news is that you can increase the likelihood of spotting opportunities for advancement, being considered as a suitable candidate and succeeding in being selected. In other words you too can have luck within your control if you are prepared to behave think and approach things in the way that lucky people do Now not every lucky person does all of the things in the Checklist below, but the luckiest people will already be answering yes to most of the questions. How do you score? Luck and Careers - Checklist Ask yourself the following questions and make a note of the areas you most need to address to get your own career moving Take charge of your career and yourself Do you look on your career as you would a work project? Do you include it in your priorities? Do you give it time and attention? Is it organised and project-managed as professionally as if you were being paid to do it as part of your job or as if a large bonus was dependent on it? How well do you cope when someone else gets just the break you were looking for? Are your emotions out of control - or do you choose to look upon it in a way which will get you closer to what you want rather than further away? Action: Pick a particular career situation in the past which you wished youd handled better. If you had been able to choose your behaviour, what would you have done differently and in what way might your results have been better? Be clear about what you want Weve all heard the saying If you dont know where youre going, how will you know if youve arrived? But how many of us apply that to our careers? What does success mean for you? Whose definition is it is it yours or someone elses. Have you written down your career goals? People who write their goals down and who look at and review them regularly are far more likely to achieve them than those who go around with just a vague idea of what they are Action: Write down your career goals now and make sure they are yours! Change your behaviour Have a good look at what you are actually doing to enhance your career. Have you fallen into the trap of becoming too comfortable where you are, so that while you may want to advance in your career, the effort of getting out of your current comfort zone is just too much? Maybe you let opportunities slip by because you are too busy to apply for an opening or you rationalise that you dont exactly match the job specification so you wouldnt get it anyway? Maybe you are not prepared to make the relevant sacrifices e.g. by dropping a hobby or spending more time at work Maybe on the contrary you have got used to being in an uncomfortable situation where you have good reasons to stay. After all you can probably get the sympathy vote if you play your cards right and Better the devil you know.! Maybe its now time to be a little bolder and to do things differently. If you had to change one thing, what would make the biggest difference? Would it be a change in attitude, a change in behaviour, an increase in knowledge or an increase in your skills? Action: Make a note of exactly what you need to change - and what you are going to do NOW to set that ball rolling Use your brain Using the brain is not just to do with traditional intelligence. We are often brought up to use mainly the part of our brain that thinks logically and ignore our emotions and our intuition at work. The brain is the most wonderful computer. When making career decisions do you restrict its use to simply basing your decision on the facts or on the other hand do you let the emotional part of the brain overtake you so that your excitement and enthusiasm (or your anger and frustration) about something overrides your good sense with dire results? The trick here is not to be swayed by either emotion or facts alone but to choose to bring all aspects of the brain into play. This means combining good sound thinking with appropriate emotion and it also means listening to your inner voice and paying attention to what its saying Action: Consider the best career decisions you have made in the past. Get a feel for what part thinking, emotion and intuition have all played in getting you the results you wanted. Decide how you can replicate that strategy with opportunities that are likely to arise in the future Be visible Part of getting on in any career is being visible to the people who matter. This works whether you are in an organisation and looking for advancement within it or whether you are looking to move to another organisation. Of course visibility brings with it risks. Your triumphs will work for you but if you fall flat on your face that will be noticed too! Lucky people recognise that and are prepared to take that risk and the consequences Do you treat networking as a legitimate business activity? Do you plan how to make the most of networking opportunities whether they are formal meetings such as professional forums or in-house meetings where you have the opportunity to shine and to build relationships? Do you pro-actively follow up any useful contacts that you make and keep in touch with them over the long term? Action: Give yourself a score on networking from 1 10 where 1 is low and 10 is high. Write down 3 actions that you can take NOW that will help you become more visible, so that when career opportunities arise and your name is mentioned those who matter will know who you are and what you can contribute Get what you expect Many people have had the experience of dreading something a job interview, a change in working practices, a review meeting with the boss and finding that it went as bad, or worse, than our imaginings. Have you done this? If so, you have programmed yourself to be unlucky! Its just as easy and much more fun to programme yourself for great results. But first take a look at what you expect. Are your expectations, beliefs and assumptions generally positive - or are they negative? How do you look at your career - do you remember and notice all the good things about it or focus on what isnt working? How do you view yourself are you someone who feels good about themselves or do you regularly beat yourself up? Whats your attitude to other people do you see them as generally good or do you believe they people will shaft you given half a chance? Action: List your answers to the previous questions. For those that are negative consider how these are taking you further away from your career goals and then replace your belief/assumption/expectation with something more positive. Try it on for size, see how it feels and then experiment with looking through a new pair of eyes Give yourself a career MOT How well do you know yourself and your capabilities? How long is it since you gave yourself a complete overhaul and genuinely asked yourself whether you were fit for advancement? For example when was the last time you went on appropriate training to brush up your knowledge or skills? When did you last ask for feedback not just on your results at work but on how credibly you come across if you were to go for a more stretching role? When did you last have a coaching session or complete a psychometric test to check out your personal strengths and weaknesses? Have you ever requested (or had) 360 feedback (feedback from your team, your colleagues, your boss etc?) Are you brave enough for this? You need to be if you are to be lucky in your career. It is hard to get good quality feedback that will enable you to face square on to some of the sensitive barriers to promotion which everyone else may see - but you cant Action: Decide on the kind of feedback you need most that will help you advance your career. Choose the best way to get that feedback. Write down an action that will take you the first step towards getting there NOW HYPERLINK "http://www.switchtosuccess.co.uk" www.switchtosuccess.co.uk Heather Summers and Anne Watson Go to HYPERLINK "http://www.switchtosuccess.co.uk" www.switchtosuccess.co.uk to check out your personal Luck Profile PAGE 4 !"[_tuv| 7 9 \ d h ʳzi[iMi?i?i?zh`dCJOJQJ^JaJh+CJOJQJ^JaJh*+CJOJQJ^JaJ h?h*PCJOJQJ^JaJhXCJOJQJ^JaJ,hXh*P5B*CJOJQJ^JaJphff&h*+5B*CJOJQJ^JaJphff,hXhX5B*CJOJQJ^JaJphff hhCJOJQJ^JaJ,hgh5B*CJOJQJ^JaJphffh*PCJOJQJ^JaJ!"uv : ( ) :;gd*Pu/0 ( ) N U h :;ĶwwiwUwGh/DiCJOJQJ^JaJ&h-hQ56CJOJQJ^JaJhrG$CJOJQJ^JaJhQCJOJQJ^JaJh-CJOJQJ^JaJh9&CJOJQJ^JaJ)hLothLotB*CJOJQJ^JaJphffhLotCJOJQJ^JaJhCJOJQJ^JaJ,hhX5B*CJOJQJ^JaJphff,hh5B*CJOJQJ^JaJphff'+BXMNO/068VaִȊȊ|n|```N#hEu^hEu^6CJOJQJ^JaJhEu^CJOJQJ^JaJh]CJOJQJ^JaJhQCJOJQJ^JaJhLotCJOJQJ^JaJhOcCJOJQJ^JaJhZCJOJQJ^JaJ&h-h/Di56CJOJQJ^JaJhUpCJOJQJ^JaJh/DiCJOJQJ^JaJh9&CJOJQJ^JaJhA)CJOJQJ^JaJNOEFcd *+2 & FgdKi\gd] & Fgd]gd*P0EFYbcd Sֿn\Jn<h]CJOJQJ^JaJ#hKi\B*CJOJQJ^JaJphff#hEu^B*CJOJQJ^JaJphff)hUph]B*CJOJQJ^JaJphffhLotCJOJQJ^JaJ,hKi\hLot5B*CJOJQJ^JaJphff,hKi\hEu^5B*CJOJQJ^JaJphff,hKi\hA)5B*CJOJQJ^JaJphffhKi\CJOJQJ^JaJhEu^CJOJQJ^JaJhA)CJOJQJ^JaJSV()*ֺȬȬȬȞweWWhCCJOJQJ^JaJ#h-/?h-/?6CJOJQJ^JaJ#hCB*CJOJQJ^JaJphff)hChCB*CJOJQJ^JaJphffh-/?CJOJQJ^JaJh@mCJOJQJ^JaJh]CJOJQJ^JaJhKi\CJOJQJ^JaJhA)CJOJQJ^JaJhEu^CJOJQJ^JaJhOQCJOJQJ^JaJ. +024βΤzeSzAz#hyhy6CJOJQJ^JaJ#hCB*CJOJQJ^JaJphff)hChCB*CJOJQJ^JaJphffhyCJOJQJ^JaJhEu^CJOJQJ^JaJhDCJOJQJ^JaJh-CJOJQJ^JaJh|CJOJQJ^JaJhOQCJOJQJ^JaJh@mCJOJQJ^JaJhKi\CJOJQJ^JaJ)hKi\hKi\B*CJOJQJ^JaJphff234JK|}67V W u!v!w!gd~ & Fgd~ & Fgd&#gd*P4IJKMNuzMN ǹ}oaSSB h*+h*+CJOJQJ^JaJhtCJOJQJ^JaJh6 CJOJQJ^JaJhOQCJOJQJ^JaJhOcCJOJQJ^JaJh2CJOJQJ^JaJ#hh&#6CJOJQJ^JaJhf @CJOJQJ^JaJh&#CJOJQJ^JaJhEu^CJOJQJ^JaJ)h&#hDB*CJOJQJ^JaJphff)h&#h&#B*CJOJQJ^JaJphffWXYZ[\]~7{|ds~ȺȬȬ~p~~b~bbhCJOJQJ^JaJh|CJOJQJ^JaJhf @CJOJQJ^JaJh2CJOJQJ^JaJ#hOQhld6CJOJQJ^JaJhldCJOJQJ^JaJhOcCJOJQJ^JaJhOQCJOJQJ^JaJhCJOJQJ^JaJhW_CJOJQJ^JaJh*+CJOJQJ^JaJcho657]dβ}oooaaSoEohCCJOJQJ^JaJhW_CJOJQJ^JaJhYCJOJQJ^JaJhHnMCJOJQJ^JaJ#hHnMB*CJOJQJ^JaJphff)h~h~B*CJOJQJ^JaJphffh~CJOJQJ^JaJh&#CJOJQJ^JaJh*+CJOJQJ^JaJhCJOJQJ^JaJhCCJOJQJ^JaJ)hChCB*CJOJQJ^JaJphff 4 7 L M U V W ^ m r W!]!u!v!w!!!!!!b""ֺֺtfXXXhCJOJQJ^JaJho9pCJOJQJ^JaJ)ho9ph/DiB*CJOJQJ^JaJphffhCCJOJQJ^JaJh|CJOJQJ^JaJ)hCh%B*CJOJQJ^JaJphffhW_CJOJQJ^JaJhCCJOJQJ^JaJhHnMCJOJQJ^JaJhYCJOJQJ^JaJh%CJOJQJ^JaJ"w!!!A#B#$$%%%&&z'{'~))*****++--. & FgdMgd~ & Fgd~gd*P & Fgdo9p""## #$#@#B###v$}$$$$$$$%%%&&"&&&&&y'Ⱥֺ򺬞{fXJJXJXh$CJOJQJ^JaJh~CJOJQJ^JaJ)hCh~B*CJOJQJ^JaJphff)hChCB*CJOJQJ^JaJphffho9pCJOJQJ^JaJhOcCJOJQJ^JaJhZCJOJQJ^JaJhvCJOJQJ^JaJhW_CJOJQJ^JaJh|CJOJQJ^JaJhCJOJQJ^JaJhCCJOJQJ^JaJy'{''''''(#()))W*u******=+K+L++++䳡~i[MMMhCJOJQJ^JaJhvCJOJQJ^JaJ)hMhvB*CJOJQJ^JaJphff)hMhMB*CJOJQJ^JaJphffhMCJOJQJ^JaJ#h~B*CJOJQJ^JaJphff)hCh~B*CJOJQJ^JaJphffh|CJOJQJ^JaJh$CJOJQJ^JaJh~CJOJQJ^JaJhW_CJOJQJ^JaJ+++++c,,,(-+-----.b.........]/b/t/u/v/x/䉺tfhOcCJOJQJ^JaJ)jh*PhOcCJOJQJU^JaJhAY"CJOJQJ^JaJ)hChB*CJOJQJ^JaJphffho9pCJOJQJ^JaJh$CJOJQJ^JaJhMCJOJQJ^JaJhW_CJOJQJ^JaJhCJOJQJ^JaJhc3CJOJQJ^JaJ..u////0000gdgdWQgd*P x/y/////////////(0)0*0ѴычxeNe6N/jzhWQhOcCJOJQJU^JaJ-jhWQhOc0JCJOJQJU^JaJ$hWQhOc0JCJOJQJ^JaJhWQhOc0JOJQJ^JhOc#hOcB*CJOJQJ^JaJphff-h`dhOc0JB*CJOJQJ^JaJphff8jh`dhOcB*CJOJQJU^JaJphff)h`dhOcB*CJOJQJ^JaJphff2jh`dhOcB*CJOJQJU^JaJphff*0C0D0Q0R0l0t0u0{0|0}0~0000óäsoahCJOJQJ^JaJhOchWQhOcOJQJ^J!hOc0JOJQJ^JmHnHu%jhWQhOc0JOJQJU^JhWQhOc0JOJQJ^JhOc0JCJOJQJ^JaJ$hWQhOc0JCJOJQJ^JaJ-jhWQhOc0JCJOJQJU^JaJ$hWQhOc0JCJOJQJ^JaJ21h:pOc/ =!"#$n% DdI*> C Ab$1`Q9XDDn$1`Q9XDPNG IHDR'6sp9sRGBPLTEds盥zo}ϐ߲Yi pHYsodWIDATHKV Ti(w@M{9<Ե6ֶf?0}ڹfH3xٹfkFv}~Bds'g3ƭ9s嫝}ځ71꼼Bc"LLr#&sqė<*8#h V~;o~-8܆<۟D˚(_<^EoW`ao-lsNŶ {Ÿ\4 kKV$ib_IENDB`DyK www.switchtosuccess.co.ukyK Dhttp://www.switchtosuccess.co.uk/DyK www.switchtosuccess.co.ukyK Dhttp://www.switchtosuccess.co.uk/@@@ *PNormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA@D Default Paragraph FontRi@R Table Normal4 l4a (k@(No List6U@6 *P Hyperlink >*B*ph4@4 EHeader !4 @4 EFooter !.)@!.
